Summarizing is an important critical thinking skill needed to improve effective reading.
Summarizing is restating or rephrasing the information you are given in a text in your own words.
Summarizing only uses the information given and not any inferences.
By actively summarizing the main ideas of what you read, you are constantly checking what you are understanding.
Summarize smaller chunks while you read.
The try to summarize the text as a whole when you are done.
Read the following text and practice summarizing chunks while you read AND the whole piece when you are finished.
If you can't summarize after some reading, you probably need to reread the text.
